The Story of Brandon Food Policy Council

Welcome to the Brandon Food Council!

Our Origin and Evolution: The roots of the Brandon Food Council extend back to 2014 with the development of the Brandon Food Charter by the City of Brandon's Poverty Committee. This visionary document laid the groundwork for our mission, emphasizing the importance of a resilient and inclusive food system that addresses the diverse needs of our community.

In 2017, we embarked on a journey to bring this vision to life. Through public surveys and stakeholder consultations, we engaged with the community to understand their desires for a sustainable food council in Brandon. The insights gained from these interactions shaped our trajectory, as we carefully crafted reports to capture the collective aspirations that would guide our work.

Milestones That Define Us:

Our commitment to fostering a sustainable and inclusive food ecosystem has been marked by significant milestones:

  • In a landmark event held at City Hall, we hosted "Towards a Brandon Food Council," bringing together stakeholders, community members, and experts to engage in dialogues that would drive positive change.

  • Creating a Food Secure Community," our annual event in 2020 was held at Helping Hands Soup Kitchen. This event was a platform for uniting the community in discussions about food security and resilience.

  • In 2020, we introduced the "Everyone Eats" Pay What You Can meal program, an initiative that reflects our dedication to ensuring that everyone has access to nourishing meals, regardless of their financial circumstances.

  • Responding to the challenge of food waste and insecurity, we launched the Food Rescue Grocery Store in 2021, championing the recovery of surplus food and its redistribution to those in need.

  • Our 2021 annual event, "Edible Brandon," was a resounding success even in a virtual setting. This event underscored our commitment to adapt and innovate in the face of changing circumstances.

Looking Ahead:

As we continue on this transformative journey, we remain committed to the principles set forth in the 2014 Brandon Food Charter. Our focus remains steadfast on building partnerships, fostering education, engaging in advocacy, and developing initiatives that drive us closer to our vision of a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food system.

We invite you to join us on this exciting adventure as we collaborate, innovate, and celebrate the power of food to unite, nourish, and uplift our community.
